Since the end of World War II, trade liberalization and economic integration have been embraced by the more advanced economies as pillars of prosperity and global peace. During this period, global tariffs were gradually brought down and trade barriers were dismantled, facilitated by the rules and mechanisms of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and later the World Trade Organization (WTO).
